How to Make Golden Milk (Turmeric Latte) with Organic Tea

Golden Milk, or Haldi Doodh, is an Ayurvedic tradition that has been cherished for centuries. It is more than just a trendy coffee shop drink; it is a warming, anti-inflammatory ritual used to soothe the body, aid digestion, and promote deep rest.

However, making it from scratch using raw turmeric powder can be tricky. It can stain your countertops yellow, taste gritty, or be overpowering. At Yerba Buena Tea Co., we created a better way.

The Secret is in the Blend

Instead of just turmeric, we use our organic Turmeric Spice blend as the base. This isn't just a flavor choice; it's a flavor solution.

Raw turmeric can be bitter. By blending organic turmeric root with naturally sweet Rooibos and Honeybush, plus creamy Coconut flakes and warming Chai spices (cinnamon, cardamom, ginger), we create a cup that is rich and complex without the need for excessive sugar.

The Science of the Steep

You might notice a pinch of black pepper in our blend. This is crucial! Turmeric contains a compound called curcumin, which is difficult for the body to absorb on its own. The piperine in black pepper increases the absorption of curcumin by up to 2000%.

To maximize this benefit, we recommend using a milk with some fat (like coconut milk or whole milk), as curcumin is fat-soluble.

Customize Your Cup

While our Turmeric Spice is the classic choice for a creamy, cozy evening latte (it's caffeine-free!), we also offer options for different moods:

  • For Morning Energy: Add a teaspoon of our Assam Black Tea to the brew for a "Dirty Golden Chai" that wakes you up.
  • For a Zesty Kick: Swap the base for our Turmeric Lemon Ginger. This creates a lighter, brighter latte that tastes like a creamy lemon tart.

Ingredients
  • 2 tsp YBTCO Turmeric Spice Tea
  • ½ cup hot water (212°F / Boiling)
  • ½ cup milk of choice (Coconut milk is traditional and adds richness; Oat milk froths best)
  • 1 tsp Honey (or maple syrup to keep it vegan)
  • Optional: Pinch of turmeric powder or cinnamon for garnish
Instructions
  • The Concentrate: Steep 2 teaspoons of Turmeric Spice tea in ½ cup of boiling water. Cover and let it steep for 7 minutes. (Turmeric root is hard and needs time and heat to release its goodness!)
  • The Milk: While the tea steeps, warm your milk in a saucepan or frother. If you want a true "Golden Milk" experience, do not let the milk boil, just get it steaming hot.
  • Combine: Strain the tea concentrate into your mug. Stir in the honey while the tea is hot so it dissolves instantly.
  • Pour: Top with the warm milk.
  • Garnish: Dust the foam with a tiny pinch of turmeric or cinnamon for that coffee-shop finish.
Notes
  • Why Coconut? We highly recommend using Coconut Milk (carton or light canned) for this recipe. The healthy fats in coconut help your body absorb the turmeric, and the flavor pairs perfectly with the coconut flakes already in the tea blend.
  • Pro Tip: If you are feeling under the weather, add a slice of fresh ginger to the steeping basket for an extra spicy kick.
