About Assam

The Heavy Hitter

If you are looking for a tea that punches above its weight, this is it. Our organic Assam is a robust, single-origin black tea from the low-lying gardens of India. It is famous for its "malty" character, a deep, rich flavor profile that holds up beautifully to milk and sugar.

Why It Works

Assam is the backbone of almost every English Breakfast blend in the world, but we believe it deserves to stand alone. We source a leaf with a high tannin content to give the tea a brisk, energizing quality and a satisfying bite. It offers the wake-up call of coffee without the acidity or the crash.

The Morning Ritual

Steep strong. This tea loves boiling water. Pour it hot, watch the deep amber liquor develop, and enjoy the aroma of toasted grain and honey. Drink it black for a focused start, or add a splash of oat milk to turn it into a creamy, comforting morning anchor.

Tasting Notes

Aroma: A deep, comforting scent of toasted biscuit, dark honey, and malt.

Flavor: Bold and robust. A full-bodied mouthfeel with notes of raisin and caramel.

Finish: Brisk and astringent. A clean finish that wakes up the palate.

Why You'll Love It

The Coffee Lover's Tea: Assam is rich in tannins and caffeine which offers a powerful lift. Unlike the spike of espresso, the energy from tea is sustained by L-theanine so you get focus without the jitters.

Single-Origin Purity: Most breakfast teas are a mix of leftovers. This is a pure, single-origin leaf from the Assam region of India, celebrating the unique terroir of the Brahmaputra Valley.

  • The Builder's Brew: Steep for a full 5 minutes. Add a splash of milk and a teaspoon of sugar. This is the classic, hearty way to fuel a morning of hard work.
  • Flash-Chilled Iced Tea: Brew double-strength and pour immediately over ice. The bold tannins prevent the flavor from watering down, creating a crisp, dark iced tea.
  • DIY Chai Base: Simmer this tea on the stovetop with fresh ginger and cardamom pods for a homemade chai that rivals any coffee shop.

Your Questions About Assam, Answered.

Is this tea good for coffee drinkers?

Yes. Assam is our closest tea to coffee in terms of body and strength. It has a "thick" mouthfeel and a malty flavor profile that satisfies the craving for a robust morning cup. If you miss the ritual of coffee, start here.

How much caffeine is in this tea?

High. Assam is known for its robust energy. Because the leaves are harvested at sea level, they develop a higher caffeine content than high-grown teas, making this the perfect morning wake-up call.

What food pairings do you recommend with this Assam?

Assam is bold enough to stand up to rich flavors. It pairs perfectly with a hearty breakfast (eggs, toast, bacon), buttery pastries like scones, or even dark chocolate. The tannins help cut through the richness.

FAQs Simply Answered

Are your teas organic?

The Short Answer: Yes. Every single leaf, root, and flower we source is Certified USDA Organic.

The Details: We believe that flavor starts in the soil. We strictly partner with growers who practice sustainable, organic farming, organic approved pesticides, no GMOs, and no "natural flavorings" sprayed on the leaves. While our Salem facility is a dedicated small-batch kitchen (and not yet a certified processing plant), our commitment to 100% organic ingredients is absolute. You are drinking pure nature, nothing else.

What are the "Refill Bags"?

We designed our system to be sustainable.

Our Signature Tin, protects the tea and contains all the detailed brewing and ingredient information.

The Refill:
When you run low, you buy a Refill Bag.

Please Note: These biodegradable bags are designed as "Transport Vessels" only. They are not intended for individual sale. Upon arrival, please use the refill bag with into your YBTCO Tin. This ensures your tea stays fresh and you have the correct brewing instructions at hand.

Where is this made?

Handcrafted in Oregon.

Every batch of Yerba Buena tea is blended, tested, and packed in our dedicated tea kitchen in Salem, Oregon. We do not use co-packers or giant industrial machines. We blend in small lots to ensure that the oils are still volatile and the spices are still punchy when they reach your cup. It is a difference you can taste.

Is it safe for allergies (Gluten/Nuts)?

We keep it clean. All YBTCO teas are naturally Gluten-Free, Dairy-Free, and Vegan. Our facility does not process wheat, soy, peanuts, or dairy.

The Coconut Note: The only allergen present in our facility is Coconut (Tree Nut), which is used in specific blends like Maven Blend and Turmeric Spice. We adhere to strict cleaning protocols to prevent cross-contamination, but if you have a severe tree nut allergy, please shop with caution.

When will my order ship?

We know you are ready to brew. Because we hand-pack orders, they typically leave our Oregon kitchen within 2-3 business days.

  • Free Shipping: We cover the shipping on all US orders over $70.
