Yerba Buena vs. Yerba Mate: What is the Difference?

It is the most common question we get in our inbox: "Wait, are you a Yerba Mate company? Or is Yerba Buena a specific type of tea?"

We get it. The names sound similar, they both involve leaves, and we happen to sell both. But biologically and culturally, Yerba Buena and Yerba Mate are two completely different plants.

Here is the definitive guide to the difference between the "Good Herb" that inspired our name and the South American tea that fuels our mornings.

1. What is "Yerba Buena"? (The Philosophy)

Translation: "The Good Herb"

In Spanish, Yerba means "herb" and Buena means "good." Historically, this term was used by settlers in California and Oregon to describe a specific variety of creeping wild mint (Clinopodium douglasii) that grew along the forest floors of the West Coast. It was so abundant and aromatic that the city of San Francisco was originally named "Yerba Buena" before it was renamed in 1847!

Why We Chose the Name

We have chosen to blend our teas here in Oregon, but we weren't just naming the company after a mint plant. We chose the name as a nod to our region's rich agricultural wisdom and the history of using plants for wellness.

Our story began in 2015, but today, our roots are firmly planted in the soil and spirit of Oregon. To us, Yerba Buena Tea Co. represents a simple philosophy that guides every blend we craft:

"Good Herbs. Good People. Good Tea."

It means we prioritize organic, whole ingredients (the "Good Herbs") to support a community of wellness (the "Good People").

2. What is "Yerba Mate"? (The Fuel)

The Plant: Ilex paraguariensis

Unlike the minty Yerba Buena, Yerba Mate is a species of holly native to the South American rainforests. It is the national drink of Argentina, Uruguay, and Paraguay.

The Key Difference: Caffeine.
While Yerba Buena (mint) is naturally caffeine-free and soothing, Yerba Mate is a powerhouse of energy. It contains a unique combination of caffeine, theobromine (found in chocolate), and theophylline. This creates a sustained, jitter-free energy boost that many people prefer over coffee.

The Quick Breakdown

  • Yerba Buena: A wild mint. Caffeine-free. Used for digestion and relaxation. (The inspiration behind our name).
  • Yerba Mate: A holly plant. High caffeine. Used for energy and focus. (A tea we love to drink).

So, Do We Sell Both?
