About Good Night

The blend for the nights when warm milk isn't enough.

An organic herbal blend built around kava root and passionflower. Kava is the ceremonial root of the Pacific Islands. Passionflower and skullcap come from North American herbal tradition, where they earned a quiet place in the evening cup, and lemon balm, chamomile, and lavender soften the flavor with bedtime traditions of their own. The cup tastes earthy and grounding, with a mild tingle on the tongue that signals fresh kava.

Where kava comes from.

Kava has been the ceremonial drink of Pacific Island cultures for over 3,000 years. In Fiji, Tonga, Samoa, and Vanuatu, the root is ground, steeped in cool water, and passed around the circle at social and spiritual gatherings. It is sipped slowly, never rushed, and the sharing is the point. Chamomile and lavender have anchored European bedtime cups for generations, and together the blend leans fully into the evening.

The 60-minute bedtime ritual.

Enjoy this one hour before bed rather than right before, so it becomes part of your wind-down. Sip it slow, put the phone in another room, and let the evening settle in. Blended in our Salem, Oregon kitchen.

Contains kava. FDA advises that kava-containing products have been associated with rare reports of severe liver injury. Not for use if you are pregnant or nursing, have a liver condition, drink alcohol regularly, or take medication. Consult your healthcare provider before use. Discontinue and seek care for symptoms such as unusual fatigue, abdominal pain, dark urine, or yellowing of skin or eyes.

Tasting Notes

Aroma: Deeply herbal with a grassy, hay-like sweetness from the lemon balm and chamomile. Soft lavender floats over the top.

In the cup: Earthy and rooted. The kava leads with a vegetal, slightly peppery taste. Lemon balm brings a citrus-mint brightness. Lavender and chamomile round the finish.

In the body: A mild, pleasant tingle on the tongue and lips. That is the mark of fresh kava root, familiar from the traditional Pacific Island bowl, and it fades in a few minutes.

Why You'll Love It

Kava root, the Pacific Island ceremonial drink: Piper methysticum has been enjoyed in Fiji, Tonga, Samoa, and Vanuatu for over 3,000 years. The root is ground, steeped in cool water, and shared from a common bowl at social and spiritual gatherings; the passing of the cup is the ceremony itself. The mild tingle it leaves on the tongue is the mark of fresh root.

Passionflower and skullcap, the American evening herbs: Passionflower (Passiflora incarnata) is a climbing vine of the American Southeast that later earned a place in European pharmacopeias. Skullcap (Scutellaria lateriflora) was a favorite of the Eclectics, 19th-century American herbalists, who reached for it at the end of a long day. Both are woven in for their herbal depth.

Chamomile and lavender, the evening-cup traditions: Chamomile has been the bedtime tea of Western Europe for centuries, with a mild, apple-like sweetness. Lavender appears in French and English herbalism as a calming aromatic, often paired with chamomile in evening blends.

Contains kava. FDA advises that kava-containing products have been associated with rare reports of severe liver injury. Not for use if you are pregnant or nursing, have a liver condition, drink alcohol regularly, or take medication. Consult your healthcare provider before use. A few notes from our teamakers.

The 60-Minute Wind-Down
Brew 1.5 teaspoons in 8 ounces of full-boil water for 7 minutes. Strain. Drink it one hour before bed rather than right before, so the cup opens the wind-down instead of closing it. Pair with a warm bath, a dim room, and no screens. The ritual matters as much as the blend.

The Cold-Infused Cup
Cold-brew 2 teaspoons in 8 ounces of cold water for 8 hours in the fridge. Strain. The cold steep leaves the tannins behind, so the cup comes out smoother and less earthy. Drink it at room temperature or gently warmed. Pacific Islanders have always prepared kava with cool water, so this method is the closest to tradition.

The Two-Cup Evening Pot
Brew a small pot with 1 teaspoon of Good Night and 1 teaspoon of Chamomile Lavender, 7 minutes at a full boil. The extra chamomile turns the earthy kava base soft and honeyed. Pour two cups and hand one to whoever is still up. The evening goes quieter from there.

My absolute favorite bedtime tea of all time!!

My absolute favorite bedtime tea of all time. I've tried so many, but I always come back to this one. I live in Stockholm now and whenever I come back to the States I always order some to bring home with me. I think it's something about the combination of the Kava that genuinely makes me feel so relaxed when I brew a strong cup of this. I have it every night!

Ingrid, we are thrilled to hear that Good Night is your favorite bedtime tea and that it helps you relax. Thank you for sharing.Wishing you many more peaceful nights!

Your Questions About Good Night, Answered.

Is this safe for kids?

This blend is formulated for adults. Kava root is a potent botanical traditionally enjoyed by adults, so we keep this one grown-up. For children, we recommend gentler evening blends like Chamomile or Honey Rooibos. For questions about specific health conditions or interactions, consult a qualified practitioner.

Does it contain valerian?

No. This blend leans on kava root and passionflower instead. Valerian (Valeriana officinalis) is a pungent root with its own long history in European herbalism; its aroma divides tea drinkers the way blue cheese divides a dinner table. We built this cup on the earthy Pacific root and the quiet evening herbs of the Americas instead. Two different plants, two different traditions.

Why does my tongue feel tingly?

That mild tingling or numbing on the tongue and lips is the classic sign of fresh kava root, familiar to anyone who has shared a kava bowl in Fiji or Vanuatu. It typically fades within a few minutes. If the sensation is stronger than you like, shorten the steep or use a little less leaf.
