The South American energy ritual that replaced coffee for thousands
Yerba Mate is a traditional caffeinated holly leaf from Argentina, Uruguay, and southern Brazil. It delivers about 85mg of caffeine per cup (roughly the same as coffee), but with a markedly different feel. Most drinkers describe it as clean energy: alert without jitters, focused without the spike-and-crash cycle that makes 3pm miserable.
The difference comes from Mate's unique compound profile. Along with caffeine, it contains theobromine (the mild stimulant in chocolate) and theophylline (a bronchodilator). Together, these create what South Americans call "the strength of coffee, the health benefits of tea, and the euphoria of chocolate." That phrase has been repeated for a century because it is accurate.
Mate grows only in specific subtropical zones with red soil and high humidity. The leaves are harvested, dried, and traditionally smoked over wood fires. We source an unsmoked green variety for a cleaner, grassier flavor that pairs well with mint, cacao, and adaptogens. Our Oregon blends respect the tradition while making Mate approachable for American palates: less bitter, more balanced, and designed for daily ritual rather than novelty.
Use boiling water. Steep 5 to 7 minutes. The longer it sits, the earthier it gets, but it will not turn bitter the way black tea does. Many people drink it in the morning as their coffee replacement, or mid-afternoon when focus starts to slip. It is also popular before workouts for endurance without stomach upset.
