About Earl Grey

The Standard of Excellence

There is Earl Grey, and then there is this. Most commercial blends use chemical flavor sprays that taste like perfume. We use pure, cold-pressed oil from Italian Bergamot oranges. We infuse this into a robust organic black tea base to create a cup that is bright, citrusy, and deeply aromatic without ever tasting soapy.

Why It Works

The secret is the balance. We use a black tea with enough body to stand up to milk, but the star is the Bergamot. Because we use real essential oil, the flavor is sharp and zesty—like biting into a fresh orange rind—rather than the artificial "candy" flavor found in tea bags.

The London Fog Ritual

Make it frothy. This is the tea you need for a café-quality London Fog. Brew it strong (5 minutes), strain, and top with steamed oat milk and a drop of vanilla. The fat in the milk rounds out the citrus oil, creating a creamy, comforting masterpiece.

Organic Ingredients
  • Organic Black Tea
  • Organic Bergamot Oil
Tasting Notes

Aroma: A sharp, clean blast of citrus zest over a warm malty base.

Flavor: Bright and lively. The acidity of the bergamot wakes up the palate, followed by the smooth, biscuit-like notes of the black tea.

Finish: Clean and refreshing, with a lingering citrus note.

Why You'll Love It

The Oil Difference: We strictly avoid "natural flavorings." By using cold-pressed oil from the rind of the Bergamot fruit, we capture the beneficial essential oils that are traditionally used in aromatherapy to lift the mood.

The History: Legend has it this blend was a gift to a British Prime Minister, but we believe it belongs to everyone. It is the most popular flavored tea in the West for a reason.

Craft Your Cup

  • The Double Bergamot: If you love citrus, add a slice of fresh lemon to your cup. It amplifies the bergamot oil for a double-dose of zest.
  • Earl Grey Shortbread: Grind the leaves into a fine powder and mix them into your cookie dough. The oil infuses the butter with an incredible floral flavor.

Your Questions About Earl Grey, Answered.

Does this taste like perfume?

No. That "perfume" taste usually comes from artificial sprays. Because we use real, cold-pressed citrus oil, our Earl Grey tastes like fresh fruit zest—bright, clean, and tangy.

Can I use milk with this?

Yes. This is the traditional way to drink it. The tea base is strong enough to handle milk or cream, which helps mellow the citrus notes for a smoother cup.

What is a London Fog?

It is a tea latte made with Earl Grey, steamed milk, and vanilla. Our blend is specifically designed for this drink because the high-quality oil cuts through the milk perfectly.

FAQs Simply Answered

Are YBTCO’s Teas Truly Organic?

Yes, every ingredient we source is certified USDA Organic. Our commitment is to craft our blends using only teas and botanicals from growers whose agricultural practices steward a better tomorrow.

While Yerba Buena Tea Co. as a company has not yet completed its own formal USDA Organic certification, our standards for purity and sustainability are unwavering. When you sip our tea, you’re tasting a commitment to clean soil, fresh air, and the honest labor of growers who share our belief that tea should be as good for the earth as it is for your cup. You can taste this commitment in our Connoisseur Collection.

Where Are Your Teas Blended and Packaged?

Every YBTCO tea is hand-blended in small batches in our dedicated tea kitchen located in beautiful Salem, Oregon.

Our process is slow by design. Blending in small lots allows us to ensure every pouch delivers maximum freshness, flavor, and the just-picked aroma that makes our teas special. It's a level of craftsmanship you can taste in every cup, especially in our Connoisseur Collection. We package each order with care so you can enjoy a touch of the Pacific Northwest, wherever you are.

Do Your Teas Contain Allergens or Gluten?

Your safety and enjoyment matter deeply to us. All YBTCO teas are naturally gluten-free and blended in a dedicated facility that does not process tree nuts (except coconut), wheat, barley, or rye.

The only common allergen you’ll find in our collection is coconut, which we use in select blends like our Maven Blend for its creamy, tropical note. We use no added flavorings, colorings, or artificial ingredients, just whole leaves, spices, and botanicals as nature intended.

If you have specific questions or sensitivities, our team is always happy to help you find the perfect tea with peace of mind. Please feel free to contact us.

What Is Your Tea Refill?

We believe good tea, and good habits, should be sustainable. That’s why YBTCO offers our teas in two forms to reduce waste and keep your tea fresh:

  • Start with a Signature Tin: Our beautiful, reusable, and recyclable tins are perfect for keeping your tea fresh on the shelf. They also make a wonderful present, which is why they are featured in our Gifts for Tea Lovers Collection.

  • Restock with a Refill Bag: When you're running low, simply order a refill bag to top up your tin. Our refill bags use minimal packaging and ensure you always have the freshest possible tea on hand.

This practice means less environmental impact and a ritual that feels good every time you open the lid.

What Is Your Shipping Policy?
