About Pu'erh

The Living Tea

If wine gets better with age, why shouldn't tea? Pu'erh (pronounced "poo-air") is unique in the tea world because it is fermented. Originating from the Yunnan province of China, these broad leaves are piled, moistened, and allowed to naturally ferment over time. This process transforms the tea from a simple leaf into a complex, living brew.

Why It Works

Fermentation does two incredible things. First, it kills all bitterness. This is the smoothest tea you will ever drink—thick, dark, and velvety. Second, it creates beneficial compounds that support digestion. It is the original probiotic tea, traditionally drunk in China after heavy meals to "cut the grease" and settle the stomach.

The Awakening Ritual

Rinse your leaves. Because this tea is aged, it needs to be woken up. Pour boiling water over the leaves and pour it off immediately (discard the water). Now, brew your first real cup. This "rinse" clears the dust and opens the leaf for a perfect extraction.

Organic Ingredients
  • Organic Pu’erh Tea
Tasting Notes

Aroma: Deep and earthy. It smells like damp forest soil, autumn leaves, and old books.

Flavor: Thick and savory. The liquor is as dark as coffee but tastes like mushroom broth and sweet earth.

Finish: Coating and sweet, with zero astringency.

Why You'll Love It

Gut Health: Because it is a fermented product, Pu'erh is rich in lovastatin and other compounds that support a healthy gut microbiome and metabolism.

The Coffee Substitute: For coffee drinkers who want to switch to tea but hate the "thin" texture of green tea, Pu'erh is the answer. It has the heavy mouthfeel and caffeine kick of a dark roast.

  • The Heavy Meal Companion: Do as they do in Hong Kong: drink this alongside a heavy, oily dinner. You will feel lighter and less bloated afterward.
  • Pu'erh Latte: Brew it extra strong (dark black) and add sweetened condensed milk. It tastes like a rich, earthy dessert.

Your Questions About Pu'erh, Answered.

Why does it taste like dirt?

We prefer the term "Earthy!" That distinct flavor comes from the fermentation process. It is an acquired taste, similar to how people learn to love blue cheese or scotch. Once you get it, you crave it.

Is this good for coffee drinkers?

Yes. It is the closest thing to coffee in the tea world. It is dark, thick, high in caffeine, and lacks the acidity that bothers some coffee drinkers' stomachs.

Does it really aid digestion?

Yes. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), Pu'erh is considered "warming" and is prescribed to help break down fats and oils in the digestive tract.

FAQs Simply Answered

Are your teas organic?

The Short Answer: Yes. Every single leaf, root, and flower we source is Certified USDA Organic.

The Details: We believe that flavor starts in the soil. We strictly partner with growers who practice sustainable, organic farming, organic approved pesticides, no GMOs, and no "natural flavorings" sprayed on the leaves. While our Salem facility is a dedicated small-batch kitchen (and not yet a certified processing plant), our commitment to 100% organic ingredients is absolute. You are drinking pure nature, nothing else.

What are the "Refill Bags"?

We designed our system to be sustainable.

Our Signature Tin, protects the tea and contains all the detailed brewing and ingredient information.

The Refill:
When you run low, you buy a Refill Bag.

Please Note: These biodegradable bags are designed as "Transport Vessels" only. They are not intended for individual sale. Upon arrival, please use the refill bag with into your YBTCO Tin. This ensures your tea stays fresh and you have the correct brewing instructions at hand.

Where is this made?

Handcrafted in Oregon.

Every batch of Yerba Buena tea is blended, tested, and packed in our dedicated tea kitchen in Salem, Oregon. We do not use co-packers or giant industrial machines. We blend in small lots to ensure that the oils are still volatile and the spices are still punchy when they reach your cup. It is a difference you can taste.

Is it safe for allergies (Gluten/Nuts)?

We keep it clean. All YBTCO teas are naturally Gluten-Free, Dairy-Free, and Vegan. Our facility does not process wheat, soy, peanuts, or dairy.

The Coconut Note: The only allergen present in our facility is Coconut (Tree Nut), which is used in specific blends like Maven Blend and Turmeric Spice. We adhere to strict cleaning protocols to prevent cross-contamination, but if you have a severe tree nut allergy, please shop with caution.

When will my order ship?

We know you are ready to brew. Because we hand-pack orders, they typically leave our Oregon kitchen within 2-3 business days.

  • Free Shipping: We cover the shipping on all US orders over $70.
  • The Carriers: We ship via USPS and UPS. You’ll get a tracking number the second your label is printed so you can follow the tea to your doorstep.
