About Northwest Mint

Organic Mint Tea: Peppermint and Spearmint, Hand-Blended in Oregon

Northwest Mint is an organic peppermint and spearmint tea that delivers the cleanest, most refreshing cup in our lineup. We blend two varieties of mint for a reason: peppermint (Mentha x piperita) brings the cooling menthol punch that opens your sinuses and clears your head, while spearmint (Mentha spicata) rounds it out with a natural candy-like sweetness that makes the whole cup feel like a treat. The Pacific Northwest produces some of the highest-quality mint in the world, thanks to volcanic soils and cool nights that concentrate essential oils in the leaves.

Why Two Mints Are Better Than One

Most mint teas are one-note. They hit you with peppermint and call it a day. We took a different approach. By combining both species, you get a cup that starts cool and sharp on the inhale, softens into a gentle sweetness on the palate, and finishes with a tingle that lasts. Peppermint contains roughly 40% menthol; spearmint contains almost none, relying instead on carvone for its softer, sweeter character. The contrast between these two compounds is what makes this blend feel complete rather than one-dimensional. Certified USDA Organic ingredients and hand-blended in our Salem, Oregon kitchen, every scoop is exactly what loose leaf mint tea should be.

Brew it hot after dinner to settle your stomach, pour it over ice on a warm afternoon, or steep it while you work for a caffeine-free pick-me-up that resets your focus without the jitters. This is the mint tea we keep coming back to, day after day.

Tasting Notes

Aroma: Sharp, bright menthol with a sweet herbal undertone. The peppermint hits first; the spearmint follows with something almost candy-like.

Flavor: Cool and layered. A crisp peppermint snap opens the cup, then gives way to spearmint's round, naturally sweet character. No bitterness, no astringency.

Finish: Long-lasting, clean coolness that freshens the palate and breath. A gentle tingle lingers well after the last sip.

Why You'll Love It

Peppermint (Mentha x piperita) has been used for centuries across European and Middle Eastern herbal traditions to ease digestive discomfort. Herbalists have long valued its antispasmodic properties, and it remains one of the most widely studied herbs for supporting stomach comfort after meals.

Spearmint (Mentha spicata) is traditionally associated with calming and cooling the body. In folk medicine, spearmint tea was a go-to remedy for settling an upset stomach and freshening the breath. Modern interest in spearmint has grown due to its naturally occurring antioxidant compounds, including rosmarinic acid.

Together, these two mints create a caffeine-free cup that supports digestion and provides a refreshing mental reset any time of day.

Craft Your Cup

  • After-Dinner Digestif: Brew a strong cup (6 minutes, boiling water) right after a heavy meal. The menthol relaxes the digestive tract and the warmth settles your stomach.
  • Iced Mint Cooler: Cold brew two tablespoons in a pitcher of water overnight. Strain and serve over ice with a squeeze of lemon. It tastes like the fanciest water you have ever had.
  • The Congestion Buster: Pour boiling water over the leaves in a large bowl, lean over it with a towel draped over your head, and breathe deeply. The high menthol steam works as a natural decongestant.

Your Questions About Northwest Mint, Answered.

Is this just peppermint tea, or is it a blend?

No, it is a purposeful blend. Peppermint on its own can be sharp or medicinal. We blend it with Spearmint to add sweetness and complexity, creating a smoother, more drinkable cup.

Is organic mint tea caffeine-free?

Yes, completely. Peppermint and spearmint are naturally caffeine-free herbs, not leaves from the Camellia sinensis tea plant. You can drink this any time of day, including right before bed, with zero caffeine concern. It is also one of the best after-meal cups we make. The menthol in the peppermint relaxes the digestive tract and helps settle your stomach.

What is the best way to brew loose leaf mint tea?

Use boiling water (212°F) and steep for 5 to 6 minutes with the cup covered. The lid traps the volatile mint oils that would otherwise escape with the steam. Use about 2 grams (one heaping teaspoon) per 8 oz cup. For iced mint tea, brew double-strength and pour directly over ice.
