About Lapsang Souchong

The Campfire Tea

Love it or hate it, there is nothing else like it. This is the tea that tastes like a campfire in a pine forest. Our organic Lapsang Souchong is dried over smoking pine wood fires, allowing the leaves to absorb the resinous, smoky aroma deep into their core. It is bold, savory, and unapologetically intense.

Why It Works

This is the "Scotch Whiskey" of the tea world. The smoke adds a savory complexity that appeals to people who usually drink dark roast coffee or Mezcal. It is surprisingly smooth on the palate, with the maltiness of the black tea providing a sweet backbone to the heavy smoke.

The Culinary Ritual

Drink it or Eat it. While it makes a cozy rainy-day brew, this tea is also a secret weapon in the kitchen. We grind the dry leaves and use them as a "smoky rub" for grilled vegetables or tofu. It adds a depth of flavor that liquid smoke simply can't match.

Organic Ingredients
  • Organic Black Tea
Tasting Notes

Aroma: Intense and nostalgic. It smells exactly like a wood-burning stove or campfire.

Flavor: Smoky and sweet. The initial hit of pine smoke is followed by the smooth, dried-fruit sweetness of the black tea.

Finish: Long and warming, leaving a savory impression.

Why You'll Love It

The Happy Accident: Legend has it this tea was created by accident when Chinese farmers had to dry their tea quickly over pine fires to save it from rotting during a delay. The "ruined" smoky tea ended up becoming a delicacy in Europe.

Warming Quality: In Traditional Chinese Medicine, smoked foods are often considered "warming" to the body, making this an excellent tea for cold, damp climates (like Oregon winters).

  • The Smoky Maple Latte: Brew it strong and add maple syrup and oat milk. The maple pairs with the smoke to create a flavor profile like bacon or pancakes (in the best way possible).
  • The Lapsang Toddy: Use brewed Lapsang as the base for a Hot Toddy. The smoke complements bourbon or whiskey perfectly.

Your Questions About Lapsang Souchong, Answered.

Does it really smell like smoke?

Yes. There is no subtle way to put it—it smells like a campfire. If you enjoy peaty scotch, mezcal, or BBQ, you will love it. If you prefer delicate floral teas, this might not be for you.

Is it high caffeine?

It is a black tea, so it has a moderate to high caffeine level (approx 40-50mg). It is great for a morning kickstart, especially on a gray, rainy day.

Can I add milk?

Yes! In fact, we highly recommend it. A splash of milk (or oat milk) softens the intense smoke and brings out the sweetness of the black tea base.

FAQs Simply Answered

Are your teas organic?

The Short Answer: Yes. Every single leaf, root, and flower we source is Certified USDA Organic.

The Details: We believe that flavor starts in the soil. We strictly partner with growers who practice sustainable, organic farming, organic approved pesticides, no GMOs, and no "natural flavorings" sprayed on the leaves. While our Salem facility is a dedicated small-batch kitchen (and not yet a certified processing plant), our commitment to 100% organic ingredients is absolute. You are drinking pure nature, nothing else.

What are the "Refill Bags"?

We designed our system to be sustainable.

Our Signature Tin, protects the tea and contains all the detailed brewing and ingredient information.

The Refill:
When you run low, you buy a Refill Bag.

Please Note: These biodegradable bags are designed as "Transport Vessels" only. They are not intended for individual sale. Upon arrival, please use the refill bag with into your YBTCO Tin. This ensures your tea stays fresh and you have the correct brewing instructions at hand.

Where is this made?

Handcrafted in Oregon.

Every batch of Yerba Buena tea is blended, tested, and packed in our dedicated tea kitchen in Salem, Oregon. We do not use co-packers or giant industrial machines. We blend in small lots to ensure that the oils are still volatile and the spices are still punchy when they reach your cup. It is a difference you can taste.

Is it safe for allergies (Gluten/Nuts)?

We keep it clean. All YBTCO teas are naturally Gluten-Free, Dairy-Free, and Vegan. Our facility does not process wheat, soy, peanuts, or dairy.

The Coconut Note: The only allergen present in our facility is Coconut (Tree Nut), which is used in specific blends like Maven Blend and Turmeric Spice. We adhere to strict cleaning protocols to prevent cross-contamination, but if you have a severe tree nut allergy, please shop with caution.
