About Green Sencha

The Heart of Japan

If you want to know what real green tea tastes like, start here. Sencha is the most popular tea in Japan, drunk daily in homes and offices across the country. Our organic Sencha is steamed immediately after harvest to lock in the chlorophyll. The result is a vibrant, emerald-green cup that tastes like spring in a glass.

Why It Works

The magic is in the steam. While many green teas are pan-fired (giving them a toasted flavor), steaming preserves the fresh, vegetal notes of the leaf. This tea is rich in catechins and offers a distinct "umami" flavor—a savory, brothy richness that feels deeply nourishing.

The Mindfulness Ritual

Watch the leaves. This tea is visually beautiful. As the needle-shaped leaves hit the hot water, they unfurl and return to their original shape. Take a moment to watch this transformation before you take your first sip. It is a small act of meditation.

Organic Ingredients
  • Organic Green Tea
Tasting Notes

Aroma: Fresh and oceanic. It smells like sea mist and steamed spinach.

Flavor: Grassy and savory. The initial sweetness is followed by a rich, brothy mouthfeel (umami) and a clean finish.

Finish: Crisp and dry, with a lingering sweetness.

Why You'll Love It

Steamed, Not Fired: The traditional Japanese steaming method stops oxidation instantly. This preserves the intense green color and the high levels of antioxidants found in the fresh leaf.

Umami Richness: High-quality Sencha is prized for its umami—that savory, mouth-watering sensation usually associated with broth. It makes the tea feel substantial and satisfying.

  • The Second Steep: Don't throw the leaves away! Sencha is excellent for a second brewing. Just steep for only 30 seconds the second time around.
  • Cold Brew Sencha: Put 2 tablespoons in a pitcher of cold water and refrigerate overnight. The cold water extracts the sweetness (theanine) without the bitterness (tannins).

Your Questions About Green Sencha, Answered.

Is this tea bitter?

Only if you burn it! If you use boiling water, it will taste bitter. If you let the water cool to 175°F (wait 5 minutes after boiling), it will taste sweet, grassy, and smooth.

What does "steamed" mean?

It refers to how the tea is processed. Steaming the leaves stops them from turning brown (oxidizing). This locks in the bright green color and the fresh, vegetal flavor profile.

What is umami?

Umami is the "fifth taste" (after sweet, sour, salt, and bitter). In tea, it refers to a savory, brothy richness that makes the tea feel thick and satisfying in your mouth.

FAQs Simply Answered

Are your teas organic?

The Short Answer: Yes. Every single leaf, root, and flower we source is Certified USDA Organic.

The Details: We believe that flavor starts in the soil. We strictly partner with growers who practice sustainable, organic farming, organic approved pesticides, no GMOs, and no "natural flavorings" sprayed on the leaves. While our Salem facility is a dedicated small-batch kitchen (and not yet a certified processing plant), our commitment to 100% organic ingredients is absolute. You are drinking pure nature, nothing else.

What are the "Refill Bags"?

We designed our system to be sustainable.

Our Signature Tin, protects the tea and contains all the detailed brewing and ingredient information.

The Refill:
When you run low, you buy a Refill Bag.

Please Note: These biodegradable bags are designed as "Transport Vessels" only. They are not intended for individual sale. Upon arrival, please use the refill bag with into your YBTCO Tin. This ensures your tea stays fresh and you have the correct brewing instructions at hand.

Where is this made?

Handcrafted in Oregon.

Every batch of Yerba Buena tea is blended, tested, and packed in our dedicated tea kitchen in Salem, Oregon. We do not use co-packers or giant industrial machines. We blend in small lots to ensure that the oils are still volatile and the spices are still punchy when they reach your cup. It is a difference you can taste.

Is it safe for allergies (Gluten/Nuts)?

We keep it clean. All YBTCO teas are naturally Gluten-Free, Dairy-Free, and Vegan. Our facility does not process wheat, soy, peanuts, or dairy.

The Coconut Note: The only allergen present in our facility is Coconut (Tree Nut), which is used in specific blends like Maven Blend and Turmeric Spice. We adhere to strict cleaning protocols to prevent cross-contamination, but if you have a severe tree nut allergy, please shop with caution.

When will my order ship?

We know you are ready to brew. Because we hand-pack orders, they typically leave our Oregon kitchen within 2-3 business days.
