About Darjeeling

The Champagne of Teas

There is a reason this is the most famous tea in the world. Grown on the steep slopes of the Himalayas, our organic Darjeeling is a "Second Flush" harvest. The tea bushes here struggle against the high altitude and thin air, concentrating their flavor into a leaf that is incredibly complex, aromatic, and prized by collectors.

Why It Works

Darjeeling is famous for its unique "Muscatel" character, a distinct flavor note reminiscent of muscat grapes and dried apricots. Unlike the heavy malt of an Assam, this tea is light, crisp, and floral. It has a natural astringency (dryness) that cleanses the palate, making it feel more like a fine white wine than a heavy morning brew.

The Afternoon Ritual

Drink it pure. This tea is too delicate for milk. We recommend brewing it with slightly cooler water (200°F) to preserve the top notes. Serve it in your best china during a quiet afternoon moment. It is a tea that demands, and rewards, your full attention.

Organic Ingredients
  • Organic Black Tea
Tasting Notes

Aroma: High-toned and floral, with scents of wildflowers and fresh peaches.

Flavor: Sophisticated and layered. Opens with the signature muscat grape note and finishes with a crisp, dry astringency.

Finish: Long, clean, and refreshing.

Why You'll Love It

High Elevation Stress: The magic of Darjeeling comes from the struggle. The tea bushes grow at elevations up to 6,000 feet. This stress forces the plant to grow slowly, concentrating the essential oils and flavor compounds in the leaf.

The Second Flush: We source a Second Flush harvest (picked in early summer), which is famous for developing the coveted "muscatel" fruitiness that defines a true Darjeeling.

Craft Your Cup

  • The Purist's Cup: Use filtered water and steep for exactly 3 minutes. Do not add sugar. The beauty of this tea is in its natural, grape-like sweetness.
  • Cold Brew Champagne: Steep 2 tablespoons in cold water for 6 hours. Serve in a wine glass. The cold water extracts the floral aromatics without the tannins, creating a stunning non-alcoholic aperitif.

Your Questions About Darjeeling, Answered.

Why is it called the Champagne of Teas?

Because of its exclusivity and flavor profile. Like Champagne, true Darjeeling can only come from one specific region in India. It also shares a flavor profile with sparkling wine: crisp, fruity, dry, and light.

Should I add milk?

We recommend against it. Darjeeling is a light-bodied black tea. Milk tends to mask the delicate muscatel and floral notes. If you must add something, a thin slice of lemon or a drop of honey is a better choice.

How much caffeine does it have?

Moderate. Because the leaves are less oxidized than a heavy Assam, it generally extracts slightly less caffeine. It provides a gentle, focused lift, making it perfect for the late afternoon.

FAQs Simply Answered

Are your teas organic?

The Short Answer: Yes. Every single leaf, root, and flower we source is Certified USDA Organic.

The Details: We believe that flavor starts in the soil. We strictly partner with growers who practice sustainable, organic farming, organic approved pesticides, no GMOs, and no "natural flavorings" sprayed on the leaves. While our Salem facility is a dedicated small-batch kitchen (and not yet a certified processing plant), our commitment to 100% organic ingredients is absolute. You are drinking pure nature, nothing else.

What are the "Refill Bags"?

We designed our system to be sustainable.

Our Signature Tin, protects the tea and contains all the detailed brewing and ingredient information.

The Refill:
When you run low, you buy a Refill Bag.

Please Note: These biodegradable bags are designed as "Transport Vessels" only. They are not intended for individual sale. Upon arrival, please use the refill bag with into your YBTCO Tin. This ensures your tea stays fresh and you have the correct brewing instructions at hand.

Where is this made?

Handcrafted in Oregon.

Every batch of Yerba Buena tea is blended, tested, and packed in our dedicated tea kitchen in Salem, Oregon. We do not use co-packers or giant industrial machines. We blend in small lots to ensure that the oils are still volatile and the spices are still punchy when they reach your cup. It is a difference you can taste.

Is it safe for allergies (Gluten/Nuts)?

We keep it clean. All YBTCO teas are naturally Gluten-Free, Dairy-Free, and Vegan. Our facility does not process wheat, soy, peanuts, or dairy.

The Coconut Note: The only allergen present in our facility is Coconut (Tree Nut), which is used in specific blends like Maven Blend and Turmeric Spice. We adhere to strict cleaning protocols to prevent cross-contamination, but if you have a severe tree nut allergy, please shop with caution.

When will my order ship?

We know you are ready to brew. Because we hand-pack orders, they typically leave our Oregon kitchen within 2-3 business days.

  • Free Shipping: We cover the shipping on all US orders over $70.
  • The Carriers: We ship via USPS and UPS. You’ll get a tracking number the second your label is printed so you can follow the tea to your doorstep.
